The Position

The Senior Underwriter is aligned to specific programs within the P&C Programs business unit and will provide essential underwriting support to the overall execution of Program underwriting strategies. The position is accountable for referral underwriting of complex risks of all premium sizes, received and underwritten by external Program Administrators and supporting the execution of key underwriting initiatives. The Program Underwriters are responsible for overall financial performance of the assigned programs, including the underwriting aspects of program execution, including the following:

Job Responsibilities

  • Planning:
    • Support the development of annual detailed financial budget that includes key metrics that will be measured against budget throughout the year
  • Execution:
    • Handle all account referrals from Program Managers – underwrite, manage and price according to Arch Program guidelines
    • Work closely with Arch Program Managers to manage all underwriting aspects of a program, including guidelines, catastrophe capacity utilization, loss results, audits, referrals and others as necessary
    • Provide underwriting leadership to initiatives that address program profit and growth objectives
  • Measurement:
    • Analyze loss data, flow and hit ratios, renewal retention, referral activity and other relevant data to identify underwriting guideline or referral changes that support profit and growth objectives
    • Support analysis of key performance indicators for top line and bottom line on regular basis and assess versus budget expectations
    • Support the development of plans to address opportunities or issues uncovered in analysis
  • Partnering:
    • Develop strong working relationships with underwriting management and staff for each assigned Program Administrator
    • Provide technical underwriting support to Program Administrator underwriting teams (e.g., training) to help improve their business or financial results

Desired Skills

  • Solid understanding of Property and Casualty Underwriting (Property, General Liability, Auto, Workers Compensation, Excess)
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Strong customer-service focus
  • Ability to organize and prioritize to meet multiple demands and commitments
  • Effective negotiation skills
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook

Required Education/Experience

  • BA or BS, ideally with a degree/major in Economics, Business, Finance, or Accounting
  • 2-5 years of P&C underwriting experience required
  • Industry specific study and designations (such as CPCU or equivalent) preferred
