Job Summary

The Senior Underwriter, Hull and Liabilities will be responsible for driving profitable growth with retail and wholesale brokers. This position will collaborate with the broader Ocean Marine team. We are looking for a candidate who is highly motivated, and results-oriented with solid business and underwriting acumen.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for underwriting Marine Hull and Liabilities within the appetite developed by our team.
  • Independently works to appropriately select risks, evaluate, and recommend program structure, services, and pricing to achieve a balanced portfolio and long-term profitability
  • Establishes and maintains business relationships to develop new opportunities as well as visits insured and brokers/ producers to retain existing accounts in support of the producer and territory management plan
  • Independently reviews engineering information to assess risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions
  • Adheres to CAT guidelines and underwriting discipline to minimize exposure and appropriately price
  • Manages assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, new business and portfolio management goals
  • Evaluates reinsurance requirements and implements appropriate action
  • Communicates and collaborates across disciplines to establish and maintain relationships to achieve organizational and policyholder success
  • Shares underwriting expertise with underwriters at all levels

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of underwriting experience in the P&C insurance industry, Hull and Liability underwriting strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of Marine insurance products, insurance regulations and the insurance industry.
  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent organizational, desk management and prioritization skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be positive, self-motivated, and possess strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Possess strong technical, analytical, and quantitative skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to successfully negotiate in difficult situations with agents and brokers.
  • Solution oriented team player with a strong relationship management skill set working with both internal and external stakeholders and customers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to travel 5-10%.

Compensation

Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to experience, subject matter expertise, and skills. The base pay is just one component of Ascot’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual cash bonus, long-term incentives, and other forms of discretionary compensation awarded by the Company.

  • The annualized base pay range for this role is: California - $110,000 - $140,000.
