The Cyber Risk Division of Great American Insurance Group is continuing to expand. For more than a decade, Great American delivered customized cyber risk products and programs via numerous divisions and built a reputation for providing flexible offerings in combination with other products or on a stand-alone basis. In 2018, the Cyber Risk Division was formally organized by consolidating those various products and programs into one specialty business unit. We are proud to carry on the tradition of supporting other divisions’ cyber needs while at the same time expanding our presence and product offerings in the primary, excess, and programs marketplace.
We are currently searching for early career underwriters to support our Open Brokerage distribution channel. These individuals will participate in our Underwriter Development Program during their first 8 weeks of employment. This Program provides a unique learning opportunity where you will spend the first several months training with a variety of subject matter experts in areas of property and casualty insurance. This training will include a broad range of topics from claims, insurance operations, products, and underwriting to help you kickstart your insurance career. Great American’s unique company structure of 30+ business units writing niche risks and lines of business provides candidates an opportunity for a broad-based underwriter training program.
Underwriter Development Program
In our Underwriter Development Program, participants will develop the fundamental skills required of a commercial insurance underwriter. Participants will learn to review and evaluate risks and exposures for various types of commercial risks. They will work closely with experienced underwriters, managers, and line of business experts to learn underwriting and leadership skills. The Program includes hands-on underwriting of various specialty niche exposures, aimed at giving the participant an understanding of the underwriting discipline. A strong interest in continual learning is required as participants will continue to build industry knowledge and keep pace with the constantly evolving insurance industry.
After two months of full-time training, the participants will transition to the Cyber Risk Division. Products include primary and excess cyber risk insurance and Technology E&O. Emphasis will be placed on building relationships with a growing network of local, regional, and national agents and brokers. Experience with cyber security tools like vulnerability scanning and familiarity with cyber security best practices strongly preferred. The position is located in Cincinnati, Ohio (Great American Tower) and involves approximately 10% travel.
This position will begin employment June 2024.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Performs underwriting assessment for new and renewal submissions:
Analyzes coverage and limit requests and decides what terms to offer.
Applies underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations
Assesses risk quality (i.e. cyber security posture) and compliance within company’s underwriting standards
Makes recommendations regarding risk selection/rejection, pricing, deductibles, and terms and conditions in accordance with company guidelines for risks outside of authority.
Develops and maintains high level of technical proficiency with cyber security best practices and technologies
Orders and screens miscellaneous reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes such as Security Scorecard and Cyence.
Organizes, analyzes, and administers application data, cyber security ratings, financial data and other complex submission information.
Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
Conducts independent visits with agents and brokers in order to retain existing accounts, build and maintain business relationships, and develop new opportunities in support of divisional objectives.
Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
Maintains a high level of customer service.
Works in collaboration with Cyber Loss Control department and other functional areas (example: EISG) to research emerging threats.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
Field of Study: cyber security; Business or a related discipline.
Experience: Generally, 0-3 years of cyber security or related insurance experience.
Progress toward RPLU; CPLP; or CIPP designation is a plus.
Must have strong analytical, decision making, and problem resolution skills.
Responsive. Comfortable working within deadlines in both a longer term deliverable and highly transactional environments.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively and with internal and external contacts and customers.
Highly organized.
Strong PC skills.
Willingness to travel on occasion which will involve overnight stays.
Desire for continuous learning given the emerging and evolving nature of the product line.
Comfortable with virtual collaboration and remote learning/supervision.
