The Great American Risk Solutions Division provides industry leading Property and Casualty products via wholesale brokers on an excess and surplus basis. They are made up of many different teams such as Property, Binding, Product liability, Construction, Healthcare, RMU, and Product Recall.
The Healthcare/Life Sciences team is looking for a Production Underwriting Trainee to either work fully remote within the United States or hybrid out of the Cincinnati, OH headquarters. The position is part of the Underwriter Development Program which begins in June 2025 in Cincinnati, OH. If the chosen candidate does not reside in Cincinnati, they will need to relocate to the city for the first 6 weeks of employment (Housing will be provided by the Company.)
A life sciences underwriter is responsible for evaluating and managing the risks associated with insuring companies in the life sciences sector, which includes pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, and related fields. This role requires a deep understanding of the life sciences industry, strong analytical skills, and the ability to build and maintain relationships with brokers.
Underwriter Development Program
In our Underwriter Development Program, participants will develop the fundamental skills required of a commercial insurance underwriter. Participants will learn to review and evaluate risks and exposures for various types of commercial risks. They will work closely with experienced underwriters, managers, and line of business experts to learn underwriting and leadership skills. The Program includes hands-on underwriting of various specialty niche exposures, aimed at giving the participant an understanding of the underwriting discipline.
A strong interest in continual learning is required as participants will continue to build industry knowledge and keep pace with the constantly evolving insurance industry.
After two months of full-time training, the participants are placed in a business unit where they will perform activities related to risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per divisional objectives.
This position will begin employment June 2025.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Following the formal training program, additional guidance and development will continue as they advance in the following areas:
Using independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
Maintaining a high level of customer service.
Analyzing coverage and limit requests and to decide what terms to offer.
Applying underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
Ordering and evaluating reports import to the rating and underwriting process, such as Motor Vehicle reports, loss history reports, credit checks, outside inspections, loss control, etc.
Assessing risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and to initiate appropriate loss prevention actions.
Pricing business in accordance with company guidelines.
Developing and maintaining effective business relationships with internal and external customers and coworkers.
Completing all coursework/education as assigned.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in biochemistry, bioengineering, nursing, public health, business or a related discipline.
3.2 minimum GPA
Proven leadership skills through extracurricular activities, internships/co-ops, or work experience.
Superior verbal/written communication and analytical skills.
Part of a formal training program starting in June 2025. Ability to relocate to Cincinnati for the first 6 weeks.
