Underwriting Associate
We are committed to developing future leaders of our organization and are seeking recent college graduates and candidates with 0-3 years of experience in P&C insurance/reinsurance who are invested in establishing and developing their underwriting career.
Qualified candidates will participate in the following:
- Mentorship with senior leaders across the company
- Reinsurance Fundamentals training
- Tools, resources and monetary incentives to obtain the Are/CPCU designation through The Institutes
Essential Functions:
- Gain a solid understanding of Odyssey’s treaty underwriting philosophy and conduct
- Perform underwriting responsibilities for renewal accounts as assigned
- Analyze all terms of new and renewal treaty placement slips to identify unusual features or clarify intent prior to binding
- Review new and renewal contract wording to verify accordance with agreed upon terms
- Review new and renewal submissions for changes in terms and accuracy of information
- Identify and request additional information required to complete analysis
- Coordinate collection of additional information from internal sources for an overall pre-authorization review with underwriters and actuaries
- Assist in the preparation of experience/exposure analyses to provide quantitative data for the underwriting decision process
- Participate in underwriting audits in order to support production and become familiar with accounts
- Prepare, analyze and maintain rate level comparisons for specific lines of business
- Upon binding a contract, inputs abstract information into database, facilitates signature and contract documentation diary
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with underwriters, customers and business partners to provide high quality service to clients.
Skills, Knowledge & Ability:
- Effective analytical and problem-solving skills; heavy focus on mathematical coursework a plus
- Exceptional presentation and communication skills, both verbal and written
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to influence, overcome obstacles and develop positive business relationships
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to comprehend and apply underwriting guidelines
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Discretion in handling confidential/sensitive information
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi task/prioritize
- A self-starter and entrepreneurial mindset
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor degree in a related field, with a minimum GPA of 3.3
- Internship/work experience during college years
