This role’s primary responsibility is to provide relevant information in support of business needs and to support the development of innovative business solutions. The associate will possess a strong technical background in data analytics. The associate will demonstrate the ability to impact performance of the Markel First Party underwriting teams. This associate will communicate and solve problems with the direction of management. Exhibits good business judgement; assignments are completed accurately and timely to meet due dates.
This role’s secondary responsibility is to support Managing General Underwriting programs, including coding needs and process for new programs, training of Program Administrators (PA) or establishing with IT premium and accounting feed requirements, oversite of PAs data entry/coding, and any internal coding/entry needs for assigned programs.
What you'll be doing:
Role responsibilities
- Analyzes variables to identify trends, opportunities, issues, risks, and potential solutions to problems. Initiates and designs solutions. Converts business requirements to automated processes, identifies best practices that should be implemented, thoroughly documents or revises current and new business processes and flows, focuses on improving customer service, enables rapid response to changing consumer/ insurance market, and recommends alternative paths forward on projects when necessary, to help position Markel as a world-class leader in insurance.
- Provides expertise, knowledge, and insight to help the business improve performance and grow the business by solving problems. Identifies improvements to processes and methods; assists with efforts to integrate or implement solutions in order to more effectively deliver requirements and support the business/department. Serves as a catalyst for change. Assists in the development of project communication and presentation materials. Executes on implementation strategies, including real time progress reporting on objectives, and escalates risks or concerns. Owns data collection / feature engineering process and can identify anomalies that may impact results of analysis. Recommends alternative paths forward on projects when necessary, keeping long range goals at the forefront of decision making. Demonstrates ability to interpret model results and make connection to expected impact on business.
- Assist in assessment of near-term needs, establishing business priorities; consulting with technical SMEs; identifying options, risks, costs versus benefits, and impact on other business processes and system priorities. Proactively communicates to keep business stakeholders informed of status, risks, obstacles, and other related information throughout involvement with project. Actively participates in project requirement sessions, communicating ideas/risks/concerns to key stakeholders.
- Provides input as a subject matter expert. Maintains up to date knowledge in area of expertise through proactive research and continuing education to as to achieve functional objectives. Documents and reports system problems for which system enhancements or modifications are needed. Participation includes requirement building and testing phases for appropriate solution. Intermediate to advanced skillset in Qliksense and PowerBI. SQL experience a plus. Willing to develop opportunities in AI through Microsoft Copilot.
- Assist in training less experienced associates, PAs, visitors, interns, or others to build knowledge base. Provides backup and assistance to the underwriting team.
- Supports business with timely response to inquiries, and accurate and timely completion of booking and reporting needs.
What we're looking for:
- Degree in business, finance / mathematics / information systems
- 3-5 years of business experience
- Proficient in office tools and Qliksense
- Knowledge of SQL is a plus
