Drives quality and excellence in underwriting in collaboration with the field underwriting staff and corporate functions. Accountable for ensuring approved underwriting strategies and protocols are effectively implemented. The position participates in creating Underwriting strategy and targets. The Lead also educates, socializes, and attains buy-in from field staff who are impacted by changes, as well as reviewing individual accounts (both before proposal as part of an authority structure and through audit) to ensure that high standards are upheld in line with corporate intent, and works with corporate partners to design effective training to fill gaps. The Leader may contribute to corporate special projects as an underwriting expert.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance, Business Administration, Economics, Computer Science, Engineering or related field or equivalent work experience
  • 10 years experience in underwriting in a multi-line environment with strong preference to understanding of equipment, large property, or cyber risks.
  • Experience instructing junior staff of other training/teaching experience.
  • Project management experience within complex organizations preferred

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to think about risk, even when unfamiliar
  • Underwriting background in a multi-line environment.
  • Ability to influence others to achieve outcomes and maintain relationships.
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills
  • Strong MS Office skills
  • Strong understanding of insurance coverage, concepts, principles, exposures and processes to drive profitable results
  • Resourceful in order to research issues, assemble support, and recommend creative solutions to underwriting issues.
  • Familiarity with data driven decision making. Manages complexity and ambiguity with the ability to translate complicated concepts into pragmatic solutions and guidelines for the business.
  • Strong project management skills to manage multiple concurrent projects and issues.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
