Job Description Summary
Role Summary Responsible for setting and achieving strategic goals for the assigned Farm or Commercial Lines product line at a national level. Manages relationship with agencies, members and prospects including regular travel to each. Accountable for underwriting rates, market appetite, procedures, forms, compliance, budget, growth and profitablity for the Farm or CL product line. Line of business includes farm, commercial property, inland marine, crime, general liability, commercial automobile, umbrella and workers compensation. Responsible for underwriting authority over all business including complex large commercial accounts to include pricing and underwriting recommendations and supporting agencies with account proposals to potential customers. Significant account size and limits including the use of high retentions, SIRs and risk transfer mechanisms.Job Description
Reports To: VP, Agribusiness Underwriting.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop strategic underwriting plans and leads underwriting teams with a national scope. Responsible for strong communication of these goals to associates. Leads change initiatives impacting department. Contributes to financial forecasting, planning and budgeting., SIRs and risk transfer mechanisms including financial underwriting. Property schedules up to $1,000,000,000 and umbrella limits of $25,000,000. Extensive knowledge of Middle and/or Large market, Farm and Commercial Lines underwriting preferred.
2. Maintains composition of designated book of business as directed by Underwriting Vice President to achieve favorable results including growth, retention, and profitability.
3. Promotes our mutual advantage and solicits feedback from agencies, members and prospects including regular visits. Understands and drives business processes and product decisions based on the needs of the customer.
4. Directs associates performance, management, salary planning and administration, training & development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement.
5. Collaboration/Innovation/One Nationwide. Tapping in to key relationships to leverage with existing members. Assist other business units in finding solutions for their middle market needs and limitations.
Breadth Across Enterprise:
Responsible for a nation wide territory of Farm or Commercial Lines business within Agribusiness group.
Financial Responsibility and Scope:
Direct financial responsibility for DWP growth, profitability and retention. B udget up to $5M.
Leadership Accountability:
Developing Strategy:
Providing Input on Strategic Direction: Provides recommendations and input on strategic opportunities to Agribusiness leadership and other senior leaders across the company.
Executing Strategy: Drives implementation through direct reports within assigned business unit.
Team Composition:
Direct reports would be directors, managers and consultants (4-7 directs). Capacity to manage total team of 100 associates.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education/Certification/Licenses: Bachelor degree strongly preferred. Industry certifications and designations preferred. CPCU, AU, etc.
Experience/Skills: 8 to 10 years of underwriting experience required with minimum of 3 years in Farm, Middle, and/or Large Market underwriting preferred. Communication and leadership skills necessary.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experience may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.
Job Conditions:
Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt).
Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
