Evaluate complex risks by performing credit and financial analysis of bond contracts. Complete underwriting on new business and renewal contracts. Provide advanced technical guidance to agents regarding various underwriting information, including cross-selling other company products and services. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Perform financial and statistical analysis of complex bond submissions, utilizing company systems.
  • Resolve challenging bond issues through telephone, written correspondence and/or personal contact with agents, insureds and/or internal employees.
  • Independently make decisions on bond submissions for new business and for renewals within delegated authority levels.
  • Develop and present underwriting recommendations, as required, to management.
  • Ensure adequate pricing of individual risks through proper classification, accuracy of information and adherence to company bond policies, procedures, standards and philosophy and all applicable rate filings.
  • Processes renewal form letters, status inquiry reviews and revisions.
  • Participate in agency marketing visits and underwriting meetings.
  • Promote company products and services.
  • Provide guidance to agents, policy holders, and other internal personnel regarding technically challenging bond situations in office or on a regional level.
  • Keep abreast of industry-related legal and regulatory information, issues and decisions that effect the bond department.
  • Recommend changes in bond policies or procedures which would benefit the department and the company.
  • Act as a proactive advisor to management and other bond personnel on bond issues.
  • Mentor and/or train less experienced underwriters and trainees.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Excellent analytical skills; oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have a keen knowledge of Suretyship and the ability to interpret product and laws.
  • Must have knowledge of PC adaptation of software applications.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • College degree preferred.
  • 2-4 years of underwriting experience or equivalent related work experience (credit modeling, accounting, FS analysis, etc).

The expected starting salary range for this role is $82,000 - $130,000. The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
