Responsibilities

As an AVP, Commercial Lines Underwriting, you'll provide leadership, guidance and support to the entire underwriting team to ensure that company production and profitability goals are achieved by successfully:

  • analyzing, managing and reporting on key production, pricing and profitability metrics
  • developing, implementing, executing and managing the underwriting appetite, underwriting guidelines and authorities
  • developing and delivering training on various insurance topics
  • responding to account referrals
  • participating in underwriting initiatives both within Union Standard and across W.R. Berkley companies
  • managing product development, including the development and/or enhancement of new/existing products
  • ensuring that products and rates follow all insurance laws, regulations and company strategic plans

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Consulting on a full spectrum of underwriting activities and processes within the department
  • Directing high-level cross-functional teams to support underwriting initiatives
  • Being knowledgeable and leading discussions regarding the underwriting marketplace, regulatory trends and issues (windpools, legislative changes, emerging issues, etc.)
  • Establishing and/or promoting underwriting best practices.
  • Contributing to long-term underwriting strategies for the company
  • Developing, implementing and executing of operational plans to ensure strategic plans and corporate objectives are achieved
  • Completing departmental budgeting and forecasting
  • Conducting periodic underwriting audits to ensure guidelines, authorities and procedures are being followed and to assess education and/or training needs.
  • Developing and implementing proper training seminars/classes for employees and/or agents.
  • Monitor the use of human and capital resource allocations to parallel to Company requirements and resources. Allocate these resources to assist in accomplishment of Company, Departmental and Individual goals as defined in Commercial Lines Requests for Action (RFA).
  • Assist and provide resources for the Commercial Line Employees to enable them to perform their job functions within the quality, service and productivity standards of the Company.
  • Participate as a member of the Company Management Staff in developing the Strategic, Tactical and operational plans of the Company. Facilitate Action Plans leading to the accomplishment of Company goals.
  • Anticipate the Company needs for future Commercial Line resources and incorporate those needs into Commercial Lines plans. This includes the management of consulting and contract service providers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree or equivalent job-related experience
  • 10 Years of Underwriting Experience Required
  • Property and Casualty experience including the following lines of business; Property, General Liability, Automobile, Worker’s Compensation and Umbrella.
  • CPCU Preferred
  • Past experience leading / managing a group of employees or a book of business to profitable growth preferred
  • Experience thinking strategically and implementing the strategy through sound tactics
  • The ideal candidate will possess a deep underwriting knowledge of Property Casualty business and will also have the ability to lead others during a period of growth and change.
  • The candidate must possess experience and passion for managing a book of SME business.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience using technology to drive “ease of doing business”. Familiarity with the use of 3rd party data sources, and “rules based” underwriting to drive underwriting decisions and profitable growth is important.
