Responsibilities

The Director of Staff Underwriting is a critical position that will lead product, compliance and internal audit for the underwriting department at Intrepid Direct. The role requires an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Intrepid Direct’s underwriting goals, product set, systems & data; and a deep understanding how these items interact with and impact other departments.

The role will explore the possibility of new insurance products, new business segments, analyze and develop strategy on available data for the group, provide subject matter expertise to the underwriting team, and build high-level underwriting philosophy in partnership with the rest of the underwriting leadership team.

Key functions include but are not limited to:

  • Owns product set for all lines of business to ensure the right features are developed; monitors and identifies any product gaps; and sets strategic alignment and prioritization
  • Regularly reviews and manages the product set (feature/functionality) for appropriateness of marketing strategy, market competitiveness, customer experience, regulatory compliance, risk management, as well as efficiency of performance
  • Accountable for the quality control/internal audit of underwriting files
  • In concert with the underwriting leadership team, ensures product changes and any applicable ensuing rate impact aligns with underwriting goals, guidelines, workflows and company strategy
  • Works closely with Enterprise Product Shared Services to ensure filings are done timely; responds to state objections as applicable
  • Works closely with Berkley Technology Services to ensure new products are programmed as intended
  • Researches potential new products and verticals; as well as industry and competitor data
  • Implements and trains the underwriting team/company on new products
  • Responsible for general training within the underwriting department
  • Analyzes all current proprietary forms (for all lines of business) to ensure compliance against ISO filings
  • Manages underwriting guidelines and best practices content
  • Serves as a technical resource
  • Formalizes UAT testing for the underwriting team
  • Accountable for general compliance and SOX tasks for underwriting
  • Collaborates and communicates with all impacted departments to develop and prepare for changes in the underwriting product

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university;
  • Minimum of 10 years commercial lines property and casualty underwriting experience as a company underwriter, supervisor/manager, and/or product specialist
  • CPCU and/or similar insurance designations
  • Extensive experience with commercial lines product coverage form verbiage and filings
  • Multi-line commercial lines background including Property, Liability, Automobile, Umbrella, and Workers Compensation
  • Build sustainable relationships of trust through open and interactive communication
