Zurich North America is hiring an Underwriting Account Service Manager I for our Middle Markets Complex Casualty Team. This is remote opportunity with the possibility to work on a hybrid basis in any of our Zurich US locations.

As a member of Zurich’s Underwriting Operations management team, you will have the opportunity to lead, motivate and develop the Complex Casualty Underwriting Account Servicing team to develop and deliver customer-specific, value added services for existing and new loss sensitive accounts.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

Key Accountabilities:

  • Accountable for ensuring teams meet key operational performance goals.
  • Assess and evaluate underwriting processes in order to implement agreed technical standards, controls, practices and procedures, maintaining underwriting disciplines and identifying opportunities for improvements.
  • Follows up regularly with producers as needed to discuss status of new business, upcoming renewals, and renewals in process, and to develop appropriate action.
  • Performs customer service and account management responsibilities, as needed, which may include resolving issues related to billing, making changes to policies and answering policy coverage related questions.
  • Participates in key account business relationships in person or teleconference with Underwriters.
  • Conducts regular performance evaluations, ensures staff are meeting performances standards based on key operations performance metrics, staffing models and growth goals of the business units supported. Regularly conduct career development conversations with staff and creates robust development plans.
  • Makes staffing decisions concerning hiring and guides staff development through identifying skills and training needs, delegating tasks appropriately, and motivating staff to provide outstanding client service.
  • Build insurance operations and underwriting skills and knowledge by participating in cross-training and learning additional processes and procedures to support multiple workflows and contribute to effectiveness of team operations.
  • Builds strong relationships across the business. Takes leadership role in Underwriting team huddles and meetings.
  • Acts as subject matter expert for initiatives aimed at continuous improvement and operational performance.

Business Accountabilities:

  • Supervises support staff and provide guidance to junior supervisors so that team members deliver to business requirements.
  • Monitor and review financial information, updating where necessary in order to identify any anomalies or discrepancies and ensure management has access to up to date and accurate information.
  • Monitor and review work undertaken by project team in order to ensure appropriate use of resources and adherence to schedules.
  • Conduct due diligence on transactions and processes in order to determine the risk profile and compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Assess and evaluate underwriting processes in order to implement agreed technical standards, controls, practices and procedures, maintaining underwriting disciplines and identifying opportunities for improvements.

Performance Management Accountabilities:

  • Manage and coach a team of employees to set goals and achieve results.
  • Recruit and select employees to join team and determine when team members should be retained.
  • Manage performance of team members, including insuring team members comply with company policies and expectations and take appropriate action.
  • Establish objectives and set priorities for direct reports.
  • Assess performance of direct reports and ensure direct reports have meaningful on-boarding, Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and developmental actions.
  • Provide regular, actionable coaching and feedback to employees to review progress, recognize accomplishments, support development and/or improve performance.

  • Client Internally Focused- The job’s core deliverables rely on delivering service to internal clients, usually at the line manager or employee level. May involve sharing subject matter expertise to others in the organization or supporting others in their efforts to deliver on our promise,

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Insurance, Underwriting or Market Facing area
    OR
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice, including Associate Degree and 4 or more years experience in the Insurance, Underwriting or Market Facing area
    OR
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Insurance, Underwriting or Market Facing area
    AND
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal and regulatory environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Advanced knowledge of Complex Casualty line of business
  • Advanced knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal and regulatory guidelines
  • People management or supervisory experience
  • Ability to manage and build rapport with team
  • Advanced skills in problem solving, relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win-win negotiation
  • Excellent organizational, written, oral communication and presentation skills
  • Insurance Certifications
  • Experience working in a production and metrics based environment

Compensation for roles at Zurich varies depending on a wide array of factors including but not limited to the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. As required by local law, Zurich provides in good faith a reasonable range of compensation for roles. For additional information about our Total Rewards, Click here. Other rewards may include short term incentive bonuses and merit increases. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are encouraged to apply, and will be considered based on experience, skill, and education. The salary provided is a nationwide market range and has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location where the position may be filled. The proposed salary range for this position is $72,800.00 - $119,200.00, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 10%.
